Utopolis is a sound installation inspired by Tufatopolis, the annual summer art project held at the former textile factory and current cultural center TUFA in Trier.
Tufatopolis is an ever-changing city imagined, built, and governed by children. Its transformation is not limited to physical structures; its social dynamics continuously evolve according to the visions, ideas, and interactions of the children who inhabit it throughout the summer.
As part of the project, a series of video interviews was conducted with both the children and the organizers of Tufatopolis. These conversations became the starting point for the installation, which features a floor-based landscape composed of twenty-five paper buildings.
Using Arduino technology, LED lights and sound sensors were integrated into the miniature structures. The installation responded to the presence and movement of visitors within the space, illuminating individual buildings or groups of buildings. The paper city also interacted with a vintage television set positioned within the installation, which continuously screened the video interviews. Through this interplay of light, sound, video, and audience participation, Utopolis transformed the ideas and voices of its young inhabitants into a dynamic audiovisual environment.
