Mon livre acousmatique

Book / Reactivision / Webcam / Speakers / Laptop / Processing

Mon Livre Acousmatique is an interactive sound book inspired by the ancient Chinese I Ching (Book of Changes), reinterpreted through a contemporary audiovisual and sonic framework.

The work consists of a book containing 64 blank pages, each marked with a graphic symbol in the form of a QR code. As the pages are turned, the symbols are detected by a webcam embedded in a reading lamp and processed through a custom-built system developed in Processing. Each symbol triggers a corresponding sound recording, transforming the act of reading into an act of listening.

The 64 sound compositions correspond to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The sonic material was inspired by the medical phenomenon of aphasia, a neurological disorder that often occurs following a stroke and affects language production and comprehension. Drawing from this condition, the work explores the fragile relationship between meaning, communication, and sound.

Mon Livre Acousmatique functions as both a book and a performative interface. Each turn of a page activates a new sonic event, allowing visitors to shape the temporal structure of the composition. The audience is invited to assume the role of a conductor, deciding when sounds emerge, overlap, or fall silent, thereby creating a unique listening experience with every interaction.
